The adidas terrace trio — Samba, Gazelle, and Spezial (SPZL) — are often confused for one another. They share a lineage of low-profile, suede-and-leather, three-stripe sneakers, but they wear and read differently. Here is how to choose.

adidas Samba

The oldest and most iconic of the three, dating to 1950 as an indoor-soccer shoe. Its signatures are the leather upper, suede toe overlay, gum sole, and a very low, flat profile. The Samba is the most “default” of the three right now — clean, understated, and endlessly versatile. It fits narrow and low, and many people size down a half size.

adidas Gazelle

Originally a 1960s–70s training shoe, the Gazelle has a fuller suede upper and a slightly more retro, rounded look, without the Samba’s contrasting toe overlay. It leans a touch more colorful and casual, and comes in a wide range of bold suede tones. It is a great pick if you want the terrace look with a bit more color and a marginally softer, more casual feel.

adidas Spezial (SPZL)

The Spezial is a handball-derived model with a devoted following, especially in the UK. It sits slightly chunkier and more “technical” than the Samba, often in distinctive colorways, and carries strong terrace-culture and Manchester associations. The broader adidas SPEZIAL line is a premium, design-led sub-label. Choose the Spezial if you want something with a little more heritage-nerd credibility and presence.

Quick guide

Want the safe, go-with-anything classic? Samba. Want more color and a softer retro vibe? Gazelle. Want terrace heritage and a bit more character? Spezial. All three fit low and fairly narrow; try before buying if you can. More comparisons in Buying Guides.
